The June talk will be given by Prof. Andrea Russell who will be talking about hydrogen.
To meet our net zero goals we must move away from burning fossil fuels for electricity production and transport. A hydrogen economy is based on splitting water to form hydrogen and oxygen and then recombining these by combustion or in a fuel cell. The UK government expects 20% to 35% of our country’s energy consumption to be hydrogen-based by 2050. But where is that hydrogen coming from? And what do they mean when they talk about different colours of hydrogen? In this talk Prof. Russell will explain the colours of hydrogen and discuss the challenges we face moving to the hydrogen economy.
Prof. Andrea Russell is head of the Electrochemistry Group in the School of Chemistry at the University of Southampton. Her research focuses on the study of electrode materials for a variety of applications including batteries, fuel cells, water electrolysers, and sensors.
