The July talk will be given by Dr Habib Rostami who will take you on a journey into the world of condensed matter physics, where fundamental science meets technological breakthroughs, shaping the future in ways we are only beginning to imagine.
When we think of physics, we often picture deep space, distant stars, or fundamental particles. Yet, some of nature’s most profound mysteries unfold in the very devices in everyday use such as transistors in computer CPUs, smartphone screens, laptop memory, and MRI machines in hospitals. These technologies all originate from discoveries in condensed matter physics—the science of how atoms and electrons come together to form the materials. At its core, condensed matter physics explores the spontaneous breaking of symmetry and emergence, revealing how countless interacting electrons and atoms give rise to extraordinary properties. It explains why some materials conduct electricity while others insulate, why certain substances become superconductors with zero resistivity, and how exotic quantum states of matter emerge, paving the way for next-generation quantum technologies.
Dr Rostami is Assistant Professor in the department of Physics at the University of Bath.
