The September talk will be given by Dr Thorwald Stein of the University of Reading.

How quickly do thunderstorm develop?

Why do only some clouds produce lightning?

Can we predict where and when lightning will strike?

Thorwald Stein is a Lecturer in Clouds in the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading. His primary research involves challenging weather and climate prediction models with radar observations, both from satellites and from ground-based stations. This research is ultimately aimed at understanding cloud life cycles and thus improving the forecast for tomorrow.

This talk will prominently feature the Chilbolton radar – the world’s largest steerable meteorological antenna – which is situated just under 20 miles east of Salisbury.
