The June talk will be given by Dr Richard Pemberton of Plymouth University. Richard will be talking about his research into the future of sail powered ships.

About 90% of the world’s goods are transported by sea, and as such there is pressure on the shipping industry to reduce emissions. One approach being investigated is a return to sail power. This talk will discuss the potential for sail powered cargo ships in the current economic climate, and describe the research conducted to assess their feasibility.

Dr Richard Pemberton is a Lecturer in Mechanical and Marine Engineering Design at Plymouth University.

After his Ph.D. in 2003 Richard joined GBR Challenge America’s Cup yacht racing team as a design analyst. Since then he was worked as a designer or technical consultant to sailors and yacht racing teams in many major competitions within the sport, such as: The America’s Cup, Volvo Ocean Race, Vendee Globe race, Olympics and the World Speed Sailing Record.

Before joining Plymouth University, Richard worked as a consultant Naval Architect both in a self-employed capacity and at Southampton University‘s Wolfson Unit for Marine Technology and Industrial Aerodynamics.
