In recent years, multiband EPI sequences have become increasingly popular for fMRI studies. This technique allows for multiple slices to be acquired simultaneously, resulting in faster acquisition times. Multiband acquisitions were initially made popular by the Human Connectome Project, and at first glance they provided a significant improvement in temporal resolution, without any costs in terms of signal quality. However, some recent studies looking at task-based fMRI applications have suggested there is a price to be paid for acquisition speed. In this talk I will review some recent multiband studies, highlighting the advantages and also the potential drawbacks of using multiband in task-based fMRI research.
