Bloodhound is go!

Back in April 2017, we had a talk from Alan Frener on the Bloodhound project. The aim is to build a car capable of travelling at record breaking speeds over 1000mph and in late October 2017, the car achieved a major milestone, making it’s first ever runs at Newquay Airport.

The event was described by the project team in advance:

BLOODHOUND SSC is the world’s most advanced straight-line racing car. In October 2017, Wing Commander Andy Green, current holder of the World Land Speed Record, will drive the Car for the first time at Cornwall Airport Newquay, putting it through its paces.

The runway trials will mark the culmination of a month of tests to prove the Car’s steering, brakes, suspension, data systems, and so on, as well as the EJ200 jet engine, sourced from a Eurofighter Typhoon. Thousands of visitors are expected to come and see history being made as BLOODHOUND SSC is driven at speeds of up to 200mph on the 1.7 mile (2.7km) runway.

I am very pleased to report that the event went perfectly to plan and as Jonathan Amos from the BBC reported, the car rocketed effortlessly to 210mph:

More than 3,000 VIPs and supporters club members were in attendance to see the Eurofighter EJ200 jet engine take the vehicle from a standing start to 200mph in about eight seconds.

So I’m sure the Salisbury Cafe Scientifique community will wish the team continued success and we look forward to hearing from them again in future once the records in their sights are smashed to smithereens!
