The next Sherborne Science Café will be on Wednesday 26 September 2012, starting at 7:30pm in the Senior Lunch Club Hall Digby Road Sherborne. Dr Phil Atkinson of the British Trust for Ornithology will be talking.

With the advent of smaller and smaller tracking devices our understanding of bird migration is undergoing. The talk will focus on work that the BTO and colleagues are undertaking to explore the African-Palearctic migration system and to understand why some of these long-distance migrants are declining whereas others are not. This includes population monitoring in the UK, tracking individual migrants (Nightingales, Swifts and Cuckoos) to and from Africa as well detailed work on the West African wintering grounds. Climate change and changing habitats are both implicated in the declines and the talk will explore these issues. As a prelude to the talk, check the latest progress of our cuckoos.
